NFL free agency kicks off today with the legal tampering period beginning at noon ET. You will see a number of former Ohio State Buckeyes on the move throughout the league.
One interesting situation to monitor is where QB Justin Fields will end up. Fields was with the Steelers last season after spending three three previous seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Now, it looks like two teams are worth closely watching as they both want to land the former Ohio State star.
Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets among the teams to watch for Justin Fields
Fields started the first six games of the season for the Steelers last season before Russell Wilson took over the rest of the way. It wasn’t that Fields lost the job, but it was predetermined that Wilson was the guy once he was healthy. Fields played in limited action the rest of the way and wasn’t able to take over the job for the long haul.
Pittsburgh fell off hard toward the end of the season and it was fair to question if Fields should have been playing. With the Steelers wanting Fields back to be the guy potentially, they’re quietly admitting that.
On the other hand, the Jets are trying to move on from the Aaron Rodgers era and a quarterback like Fields would fit the mold there. Fields isn’t going to come at a heavy cost and offers a high cieling if he can reach it. The Ohio State product threw five touchdowns to one interception in 2024 along with 1,106 passing yards.
“The Steelers have wanted Justin Fields ever since the clock struck zero in Baltimore. They believe he’s their best option and have an offer on the table to bring him back. However, Fields is leery after the Steelers benched him despite his winning record and he wants to see what else is out there. Insert the Jets, who are rumored to be heavily interested in Fields. His floor is a lot higher than most thanks to his deep ball, improved accuracy and running ability. If it comes down to a bidding war, expect the Jets or another team to win out as the Steelers move on to their next candidate.” — Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports
Other teams will be a factor once free agency starts with at least some interest in Fields. Don’t be surprised if a team swoops in out of left field to sign Fields. However, the heavy favorites right now look to be Pittsburgh or New York for his next contract.
