Ohio State has most of its focus on Tennessee and the College Football Playoff ahead of them, as they should. But with how the calendar is set up in college football, the Buckeyes have other things that have to take their focus as well.

The transfer portal is a major one this time of year. Ohio State was aggressive in the portal last year and they’re expected to do the same again this season.

"The number one focus is Tennessee right now, but as you know, we can't just live in a vacuum. We have to plan for the future."

One key spot the Buckeyes must attack in the transfer portal is the offensive line. The Buckeyes have fallen short of recruiting the offensive line how it needs to be done lately and they have a depth issue going forward. Josh Simmons, Seth McLaughlin, Donovan Jackson, and Josh Fryar will all be off the team following the season. The Buckeyes will have to add at least two portal players.

Recruiting offensive line via the transfer portal has worked well for Ohio State. Simmons and McLaughlin are both leaving Columbus as NFL draft picks.

It looks like Northwestern’s Josh Thompson, could be one. Currently, the Buckeyes are the favorite to land Thompson, who was on campus this past weekend visiting Columbus. The visit was noted to have gone well and the Buckeyes could be the favorite as a result. On3 has the Buckeyes currently predicted to land Thompson.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman has played both guard and tackle in college. In 2023, Thompson started 11 games at right tackle for the Wildcats. During that time, the former Wildcat allowed just two sacks. Other schools like Auburn, LSU and Michigan are in the mix for Thompson. Ohio State would fit Thompson into a starting spot right away and he has inside/out versatility.

With as fast as the portal moves, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Thompson closed in on a decision rather soon. Ohio State looks to be in a good spot to add a talented player here.
