Ohio State can tie or break the record for the number of picks made in a single NFL draft in April.
The Buckeyes would need 16 players to be selected to break that record and 15 to tie. In 2022, Georgia produced 15 draft picks. Ohio State has 15 players at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
One player that will be selected on Day 2 or Day 3 is safety Lathan Ransom. Ransom battled a ton of adversity at Ohio State to become one of the better college safeties in 2024. When it comes to being ready to attack in the NFL, Ransom shared recently how he got there.
“I think Coach Mick (Marotti) did such a good job instilling in us through the offseasons and practices that you got to do anything you can to win whether it’s claw [or] scrape,” Ransom said recently on “The Bobby Carpenter Show”. “Any chance you can give yourself a competitive edge to win. I’m gonna continue to do that wherever I end up [and] keep that mentality. Never changing that mentality. Coach Mick has drilled that in my head.”
Ransom played in 56 games over five years for the Buckeyes and made 227 tackles and three interceptions. Ransom is a hard-hitting safety who can stop the run and work well sideline to sideline. He gave a lot of credit to Ohio State’s Assistant athletic director for football sports performance Mick Maroitti, who has been with the team since 2012.
In 2024 Ransom had 76 tackles, an interception, and three forced fumbles. Ransom was one of the senior leaders that decided to return to Columbus for another season and it worked out with a National Championship run.
Ohio State will undoubtedly miss Ransom on their defense in 2025, but returning the top safety in the country Caleb Downs helps alleviate that. Jaylen McClain could start beside Downs in 2024, but expect Malik Hartford and freshman Faheem Delane to potentially play roles too.
Ransom showed he was a pro at Ohio State by staying the course, fighting through adversity, and becoming one of the best safeties during the 2024 college season.
