The Ohio State Buckeyes are set to have a different starting quarterback for the fourth season in a row in 2024.

C.J. Stroud was the last quarterback to start more than one season in a row and Kyle McCord held it down for one year after him. Ohio State rolled the dice with Will Howard last year and it worked out perfectly with a National Championship. Howard only had one year of eligibility left when he arrived in Columbus, so the Buckeyes are handing the keys over again.

Ohio State is having another quarterback completion this spring and Julian Sayin is figured to be the frontrunner for the job. However, Sayin didn’t have his strongest performance this past weekend in a scrimmage, according to Lettermen Row.

“I am told that it was not Julian Sayin's best day on Saturday. That doesn't mean alarm bells are ringing at all, but in the first extended scrimmage sessions of spring, Saying left a lot to be desired. On the flip side, Lincoln Kienholz had a pretty consistent day, I am told.” — Alex Gleitman, On3

Sayin is a true sophomore and a former five-star recruit. The Elite 11 winner committed to Alabama out of high school but entered the portal when Nick Saban decided to retire. Sayin is going up against junior Lincoln Kienholz in the quarterback battle.

The Buckeyes have had high-level quarterback play for the majority of the time under Day and this shouldn’t be a sign that Sayin won’t provide that if he is the guy in Columbus. A bad practice happens, as does a bad scrimmage.

Sayin is known for having a very quick release and as being a good processor. As a true freshman, Sayin appeared in four games and completed 5-of-12 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Sayin was the No. 3 quarterback behind Howard and now California QB Devin Brown.

The spring period of practices will play a key part in the quarterback competition. Sayin and Kienholz are in a battle and everyone expects Sayin to win the job in the end. However, it may not end up being a runaway like some think.
