Joe Burrow was once a four-star recruit committed to Ohio State. That was far before he delivered the record-setting 2019 season at LSU.

Burrow was in Columbus for three years before he graduated and transferred to LSU. While with the Tigers, Burrow was finally able to get on the field where he eventually built himself into being the No. 1 overall pick.

Recently, Burrow admitted that his time at Ohio State would look different today, and you can read about that here. In that same interview on “The Dan Patrick Show”, Burrow offered some advice to high-profile recruits coming into college.

“If you’re going to be able to make seven figures in college, you’ve got to go take advantage of that,” Burrow said. “If you are in high school and you’re getting offered that, go wherever they are paying you the most.”

Burrow was a four-star in-state recruit for the Buckeyes in the class of 2015. Unfortunately, despite being an Ohio kid, Burrow was never able to win the starting job in Columbus under Urban Meyer as his head coach. Dwayne Haskins Jr. beat out Burrow for the final time ahead of the 2018 season and Burrow transferred to LSU.

It all worked out for Burrow and he became Heisman winner in 2019 ahead of becoming the No. 1 pick to the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow threw for over 5,600 yards, 60 touchdown passes, and just six interceptions as a senior. He left college as a National Champion as well.

If NIL and the transfer portal were a thing then, Burrow probably would have left Columbus sooner. The NFL Pro Bowler would have had a big market transferring from Ohio State likely.

You have to spend big to land good recruiting classes today, that is just how it goes. Burrow’s comments regarding that players should go where the money is plays right into that.
