With how the recruiting calendar works, operating the transfer portal comes at a tough time for teams in the College Football Playoff. While Ohio State just beat Tennessee and has Oregon ahead, they also have to put some recruiting effort toward the portal.

The Buckeyes have one commitment so far with offensive tackle Phillip Daniels from Minnesota. It looks as if Ohio State is on the brink of making another addition.

Pete Nakos of On3.com has labeled Ohio State as his pick to land Purdue transfer tight end Max Klare. 247sports has Klare as the No. 1 tight end in the transfer portal and the No. 30 overall player.

“The Buckeyes are set to lose Gee Scott after the season, and Klare has emerged as one of the top tight ends in the nation in the last two seasons. Momentum sits with Ohio State at the moment.” – Pete Nakos, On3

Klare put up terrific production with the Boilermakers this season. As a redshirt sophomore, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end had 685 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games with Purdue. Last season as a redshirt freshman, Klare made 22 catches for 196 yards.

Other schools that have been interested include Texas, Texas A&M, and Michigan. Ohio State went out in the portal and for a tight end last time with Will Kacmarek. The Buckeyes don’t currently have a tight end on the team to Klare’s talent level, so he would bring some ability that Ohio State could use.

The Buckeyes are going to be more aggressive in the portal this year. Klare would be a great get early in the process to lay the groundwork for a successful portal window.

Update: The Buckeyes have indeed landed Klate out of the portal.
