Ohio State faced the tough reality that great teams do after they won the National Championship against Notre Dame.
The Buckeyes had to replace offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, and offensive line coach Justin Frye all decided to take other jobs.
After Kelly left to be the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator, Ryan Day was faced with naming a third offensive coordinator in about a year. Day stayed in-house and promoted wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Brian Hartline to be the OC.
Ryan Day confirms that Brian Hartline will be Ohio State’s playcaller in 2025
“Now he’s going to be the coordinator, now he’s going to call plays,” Day said in an interview with WBNS 10TV. “That loyalty and that patience is going to pay off and I think he is going to be the best coordinator in the country.”
Up until Day revealed that Hartline would call plays, that was not officially known. Hartline was previously the OC in 2023 but it was Day who called plays for that Buckeyes team. When Ohio State opted to bring on Kelly, Hartline had to take a demotion and be the co-coordinator. Now, Day believes that the former Buckeye standout is ready to dial up the plays.
Back in 2017, Hartline got his start with Ohio State as a low-level assistant. In 2018, Hartline became the wide receivers coach and he has held that position since. The 38-year-old has become the top developer for NFL talent at the wide receiver position.
Ohio State will turn to a new quarterback in 2025 and Julian Sayin is the front-runner to be that guy. The Buckeyes will have Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, and Brandon Inniss back at offense. Max Klare was the top tight end in the transfer portal and he decided to make Columbus his home after leaving Purdue.
As always at Ohio State, the Buckeyes will have all of the talent they need on offense to be successful and reach their goals.
