Having a huge impact as a freshman doesn’t happen often and that’s what makes the season that Jeremiah Smith has for the Ohio State Buckeyes all the more special.
Ohio State doesn’t have another Jeremiah Smith in this freshman class but they do have cornerback Devin Sanchez, who is expected to have a role as a freshman. The former No. 1 high school cornerback is the headliner of another top-five class that the Buckeyes brought in.
Sanchez isn’t the only freshman already catching attention. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day admitted that he’s been impressed by another on Monday.
"I have been impressed with Zion Grady as a young player," Day stated. "If he can learn and grow and get better and not get caught up in being a freshmen, and kind of flatlining here and continue to get better in the second half of the spring, I think he can help us as a freshman, which would be great."
Grady is a 6-foot-4, 246-pound pass rusher out of Alabama that the Buckeyes were able to land in the class of 2025. While most his age are still seniors in high school, Grady has been with the team for a couple of months getting acclimated to the Buckeyes program.
According to 247 Sports Composite, Grady was the No. 9 EDGE and No. 81 player overall in his class. The talented pass rusher had offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Tennessee, and Auburn, amongst other programs. The Buckeyes were able to go into Alabama and get him away out of Crimson Tide territory.
Ohio State lost J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer to the NFL draft process and will replace them with Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson. FCS transfer Logan George is going to have a role and C.J. Hicks is working with the pass rushers as well. Grady has a chance to fit in as depth following those players and perhaps push his way up.
Grady could be the next good pass rusher developed by defensive line coach Larry Johnson. Day saying he has been impressed by him is worth something.
With the Buckeyes having lost a lot of talent from their National Championship, a couple of freshmen will have a chance to have a role in 2025. Grady may just end up being one of those players.
