Former Ohio State LB Sonny Styles made himself a ton of money at the NFL combine, and he’s going to reap the benefit in April’s draft
Sonny Styles made himself a lock to go early in the first round while at the combine.
Thursday was a great day for several former Ohio State Buckeyes on the gridiron in Indianapolis. The trip to Indiana wasn’t so nice for the Buckeyes back in December when they fell to the Hoosiers, but it was different for a few former Buckeyes at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
Linebacker Sonny Styles specifically had a big day on Thursday and walked away a major winner due to his combine performance. The former Buckeye star was already a lock to go in the first round, but now it appears he could be a lock to go in the top-10.
Sonny Styles was the biggest winner on Thursday at the combine
Styles had himself a day on Thursday by showing the athlete he is. The former Buckeye had a 43.5-inch vertical jump, which is the highest ever by a player weighing more than 240 pounds. Styles measured in at 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds at the combine.
In the 40-yard dash, Styles posted a time of 4.46 seconds, which was tied for first among linebackers with former teammate Arvell Reese. Styles recorded an 11-foot-2 broad jump to lead all linebackers in Indianapolis as well.
Styles scored a 9.99 on his relative athletic score, which was ranked No. 4 out of 3,216 linebackers since 1987. While he was already projected to go in the first round, Styles is now looking like he will be drafted in the top-10 picks come April.
As a senior, Styles recorded 82 tackles, one sack, one interception, and one forced fumble for Ohio State’s defense. An NFL team is getting a high-character player and a good locker-room guy to go along with the athlete he is on the field. Styles couldn’t have helped himself any more than he did at the combine.
Ohio State’s defense has been special the last two seasons. Styles has been a huge part of the Buckeyes’ success, and the impressive thing is that he’s been a linebacker for just two full seasons. After coming to Ohio State as a safety, Styles is likely now leaving as a top-10 pick at linebacker.
