Ohio State’s National Championship season wouldn't have happened without the huge impact that Jeremiah Smith had from Day 1 as a freshman.
It took Smith just four days to lose his black stripe and that was an early sign that he was special. Then, the Buckeyes were careful with how much they used him in the spring game.
Smith ended up being the top catalyst for a high-powered Ohio State offense and the best wide receiver in the country. Now, he’s aiming to get even better and that should worry opponents.
“Just getting a better understanding of the game,” Smith said on where he is looking to improve. “That’s the biggest thing. I mean, there’s a lot of other things me and Coach Hartline talked about [that ] he wanted me to improve on and stuff. I actually wanted to improve on as well, but that’s one thing, just getting a better understanding of the game.”
Smith went off for 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman. The Florida native scored five touchdowns during the College Football Playoff and was virtually unguardable outside of the Texas game.
When Ohio State needed Smith the most, he stepped up in the National Championship. On third-and-long late in the fourth quarter, Smith went deep for a go ball and sealed the win for the Buckeyes.
“Just because I made that one play, I have next year, the year after that, I just can’t get big-headed. I always feel like there’s room for improvement. Never feel like you’ve just got it. That’s one thing a lot of people mess up on, feel like they had one good year, ‘Okay, I’m relaxed.’ That’s not in me. I’m going to continue to do it for years and years to come.”
Ohio State has two more seasons of Smith in Columbus and the phenom wideout is bound to break every record there is at wide receiver. Smith was the No. 1 recruit for a reason and a player that Ohio State fought very hard to hold onto during his recruitment. Now, he’s torturing defenses and only getting better.

Buckeyes are in the driver seat.
