Ohio State took care of business in their first College Football Playoff with a blowout win over Tennessee. It was the kind of win that the Buckeyes badly needed after losing to Michigan. Ohio State used a quick start to propel themselves to a 42-17 win over the Vols.
One thing that Tennessee did do well was being a very strong presence on the road with their fans. There was orange sprinkled all throughout the crowd. Tennessee had enough fans there to make their presence known, but the Buckeyes crowd was still able to create issues.
As one would expect, Ohio State took exception to the Vols’ turnout in Columbus. Ohio State’s top offensive lineman confirmed as much after the game.
"It made us feel some type of way coming out to warmups, and we were getting booed," Jackson said. "We were like, 'Wait a second.' What did they call it? Neyland North of something like that? Yeah, that was lame."
Ohio State still forced Tennessee to operate their offense on a silent count with easily 15,000 to 20,000 Vols fans in attendance.
The Buckeyes’ offensive line stepped up in a big way against a good Tennessee front. Luke Montgomery played significant at guard, as the Buckeyes rotated between Montgomery, Austin Siereveld, and Tegra Tshabola.
"When you don't notice the guards, they're doing pretty well. I noticed Luke's energy, [and] toughness,” Day said. “We blocked a lot better this game, and they have a really good front. That allowed us to have balance."
It was a complete performance that Ohio State needed to put on to open up the College Football Playoff. The road only gets harder against No. 1 Oregon next weekend in the Rose Bowl.
