Every season if you are a good college program, you are likely dealing with turnover from your staff year to head.
Following their win over Tennessee in the College Football Playoff, the Ohio State Buckeyes have suffered their first loss in terms of someone taking another job on the coaching staff.
Ohio State’s offensive line has had a tough season with injuries but has been able to remain grounded and has gotten through it. Now, it is known that Ohio State will need a new assistant offensive line coach.
News broke on Sunday that Mike Sollenne would be leaving Columbus to take a job at UNLV to be their offensive line coach. This development was first reported by On3’s Pete Nakos.
Sollenne has served as a graduate assistant offensive line coach in Columbus for the last three seasons. Now, Sollenne gets an opportunity to be a lead offensive line coach for a college program after paying his dues in Columbus.
Before joining offensive line coach Justin Frye in Columbus, Sollenne was a graduate assistant under Dan Mullen at Florida. Mullen is now at UNLV as the head coach, so the connection is an obvious one.
The coaching along the offensive line has been let this season for Ohio State with the shuffling they have had to do. Left guard Donovan Jackson had to slide to left tackle after expected first-round draft selection Josh Simmons went down with a significant injury. Near the end of the regular season, center Seth McLaughlin was lost to an Achilles injury. McLaughlin was named as the best center in the country after transferring over from Alabama, which was another testament to the coaching going on with the offensive line.
Even against the Vols in the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes threw guard Luke Montgomery into the mix and he more than held his own. The recruiting isn’t as great as it could be for the offensive line right now, but there appears to be some good coaching going on for the position group.
After beating the Vols, the Oregon Ducks are next up in the Rose Bowl for Ohio State on New Year’s Day.
