Ohio State suffered its first transfer portal entree last week when Austin Parks decided to enter the portal after two seasons with the men’s basketball program.
Now, another member of the 2024-2025 Buckeyes team is moving on after two seasons with the program.
Forward Evan Mahaffey is entering the transfer portal for the second time in his college basketball career, per 247 Sports’ Travis Branham. After spending his freshman season with the Penn State Nittany Lions, Mahaffey transferred back to his home state to play for the Buckeyes.
It was known that the Buckeyes would be going under some badly needed roster reconstruction after a 17-15 season where they missed the NCAA Tournament for a third straight time.
Mahaffey started 34 games for the Buckeyes last season and averaged 4.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. The junior’s role shrunk this past season and his minutes went from 22.1 down to 18. Mahaffey started just three of the 32 games that he played in.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native was mainly a defensive stopper for the Buckeyes often tasked with defending the opposition's best player. With senior Micah Parrish out of eligibility following the season, the Buckeyes badly need wing depth.
Ohio State is covered to hit the portal hard and they almost have to. Finding wing depth as well as size for the interior will for sure be a point of emphasis. As it currently stands, Devin Royal and Colin White are the two returning wing-forward options on the roster.
Mahaffey will play his senior season of college basketball elsewhere and the Buckeyes may not be done yet in terms of losing their own to the transfer portal.
