The Ohio State Buckeyes, like every other team, will have to maneuver everything that comes with the transfer portal when it opens up in early January.

Ohio State hopes to still be playing in the College Football Playoff when the portal opens up on Jan. 2. The Buckeyes will have to worry about retaining pieces of their roster, as well as adding to it days after their quarterfinal game against the winner of Miami and Texas A&M. Players around the country are already beginning to enter the portal, including one the Buckeyes should keep an eye on.

Jayce Brown could be a fit for Ohio State

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Kansas State WR Jayce Brown is expected to hit the transfer portal. Brown is a 6-foot wideout who posted 712 receiving yards and five touchdowns this season in 10 games played.

Brown has produced all three years he’s been in college, with 823 receiving yards as a sophomore last season and 437 yards as a freshman in 2023. The soon-to-be former Kansas State wideout is expected to be one of the top wideouts in the portal.

Why the Buckeyes could be a fit for Jayce Brown

Ohio State is set to return Jeremiah Smith next season, but it’ll likely lose Carnell Tate. Brandon Inniss should be back for his senior season, but the Buckeyes could stand to get a lot more production from the slot position. Inniss has 237 receiving yards and three touchdowns this season as the Buckeyes’ third wideout. Mylan Graham could be set for a bigger role in his third year in 2025, but he could also be a player who hits the transfer portal with no real impact yet as a Buckeye.

Freshman Quincy Porter and 2026 signee Chris Henry Jr. will both compete for playing time in 2026. Henry Jr. could have an early impact as a true freshman, though it can’t be expected to be at the level that Smith did. Still, the Buckeyes adding a proven, productive player who can man the slot may be just the way to go. Bringing in a player like Brown would force the Buckeyes to pay up on the NIL front, but why not go all in for the final season of Julian Sayin and Smith together?

The biggest factor will be what Ohio State loses to the portal from the wideout room. A player like Bryson Rodgers has a decision to make on his future at Ohio State. The bottom line is the Buckeyes raise the ceiling of their wideout room by adding a player like Brown.
