Ohio State had big expectations heading into the 2024 season with a loaded roster. However, one big question mark was just who would Will Howard be for the Buckeyes?
Howard was the exact quarterback and leader the Buckeyes needed after Kyle McCord hit the transfer portal and ended up at Syracuse.
The Kansas State transfer, Howard, raised his draft stock big time while with Ohio State. At the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday, Howard opened up about that a bit.
“The thing that is important about that is I played my best ball when the lights were the brightest, and I think I proved to people that I am best when the pressure is on and when the playoffs came along,” Howard told the media. “I think that was one of the best things and I was able to really just let it rip man and I was just being confident.”
Howard led the Buckeyes through four games where they ran over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame. In that time, the 6-foot-4 quarterback threw nine touchdowns to just one interception to go along with 1,150 passing yards. Against some elite defenses, Howard stepped up and made the plays that needed to be made.
“I think I learned a lot and I was able to push myself and be able to show teams that hopefully I can be that face of the franchise and I can be a starting quarterback in the NFL for a long time.”
In his only season as a Buckeye, Howard completed 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He added 226 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Howard was pictured as no higher than a Day 3 guy in the draft before the playoff. Immediately after the playoff, Day 2 steam picked up for the National Champion. Ohio State fans only got one season with Howard, but it was all he needed to put his name in history forever with the team.
With an overall weak quarterback class according to most, Howard could slide into that third-round area potentially. Confidence is key and Howard does not lack any of it.
