Ohio State has had its starting quarterback chosen for a few days now, and it will be Julian Sayin who takes the field against Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns.
This Week 1 showdown has been a major talking point, featuring two of the nation’s top programs. A No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup to open the season is about as good as it gets.
When it comes to the Cotton Bowl rematch, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum isn’t optimistic about the Buckeyes’ chances.
“I think Vegas is completely wrong. I really don’t even think that this game is going to be close,” Finebaum said recently. “I’m not trying to tank viewership for it. It’s a big event, one of the biggest games we’ve seen, but I think Texas’ roster is better, and I think Ohio State is going to be hungover from last year with a new quarterback. And by the way, two new coordinators as well.”
Ohio State is replacing several starters, as are the Longhorns. Both programs recruit at the highest level of the sport. The Buckeyes are also replacing both defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Promoting Brian Hartline to call the offense made sense, as Ryan Day believes he’s ready for the role. On defense, Ohio State turned to the NFL, bringing in Matt Patricia to run the unit.
Depending on where you look, Ohio State is a 2- to 3-point favorite over Texas. That edge exists largely because the Buckeyes are at home — on a neutral field, this would likely be a pick ’em.
Ohio State fans won’t like Finebaum’s take — they rarely do — but the truth will be revealed in just a few days.
