Ohio State was again up for the task in their third College Football Playoff game this postseason. The Buckeyes scored a 28-14 win over Texas, but the game was closer than the score may make it look.
The Buckeyes had two big game-changing plays that really made the difference. Just before halftime, TreVeyon Henderson took a screen pass 75 yards for a score to give the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead. Jack Sawyer ended the game with a strip sack and returned it 83 yards just a couple plays after the Longhorns had the ball at the 2-yard line.
It was a crazy moment in the game and had to feel even more wild for Sawyer and Texas QB Quinn Ewers, who were roommates at one time in Columbus.
"I felt him. I started drifting away. Thought I was gonna be able to get the ball off before he got there — obviously, it's not like I tried to give them the game," Ewers said after the loss. "I saw Jack running with the ball down the sideline, and you know it sucks, man. But he's a great player, great individual, and a great person. We were roommates when I was at Ohio State. So, you know, it sucks. It sucks. Jack's a good player, and he made a good play."
It took a four quarter battle for Ohio State to get the job done in this one. That had not been the case with the previous two College Football Playoff games against Tennessee and Oregon.
Sawyer batted a pair of passes down and was just one part of a defensive line that was impactful in this one for the Buckeyes. Ohio State sacked Ewers and J.T. Tuimoloau led the way with a pair of sacks. Ohio State allowed 341 yards of offense to the Longhorns, but just 58 yards came on the ground.
Sawyer is now up to nine sacks in his senior season in Columbus and he is finishing things very strong. He etched his name into Ohio State memory forever with the play against Texas and now he has a chance to become a National Champion.
Ohio State will play Notre Dame on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
