Ohio State and Ryan Day finally got over the hump that they had been trying to. The Buckeyes have a National Championship to show for the great run they have put together the last month.

The Buckeyes’ win over Notre Dame gives them their first title in a decade and gives Day what he was close to getting just a couple of seasons ago.

Two years ago, Ohio State was a missed field goal away from beating Georgia to move onto the National Championship. It was the game where Marvin Harrison Jr. was knocked out of it late and it totally changed things.

Following the National Championship win on Monday night, coach Day said that he couldn’t “fully understand” why Ohio State had lost that game to Georgia a couple of seasons ago.

“I understand now, it all makes sense.”

Ohio State has been knocking on the door of winning it all a couple of times since they previously did in 2014. Day has been the head coach in Columbus for six seasons now and season No. 6 was where Ohio State’s head coach was finally able to break through.

“From the start of this thing, we‘ve been knocking on the door. I think about the ‘19 team, the ‘20 team, the ‘21 team, the ‘22 team … you keep going through these seasons and we weren’t that far off,” Day explained after the game. “But you’ve got to find a way to break through and make it to where we are right now. I hope they’re all proud of what we’ve done.”

Ohio State took an early punch from Notre Dame but rebounded and led 21-7 at halftime. As good as Ohio State’s defense has been down this stretch run, one more score put the game on ice for the Buckeyes.

Pressure has been lifted off of Day’s shoulders, as he is now just the third active head coach to win a National Championship. Ohio State will again be in the mix next season, but they have time to celebrate this one for now.
