The rivalry between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines isn’t one that can truly be understood unless you’re a deeply invested fan of either program. Saturday marked a turning point for the Buckeyes in terms of momentum in the rivalry. Ohio State didn’t let a slow start derail them, walking away with a 27–9 win over Michigan on the road.
After Michigan defeated the Buckeyes 13–10 last year in Columbus, the Wolverines planted a flag at midfield — an act that sparked plenty of debate and even national attention. Following this year’s win, several Buckeyes appeared ready to plant an Ohio flag at the Michigan midfield logo, but the Ohio State staff quickly shut it down, as seen in the video below.
Ryan Day wanted the Buckeyes to win with humility
“I think the best thing to do is win with humility, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Day said after the win over Michigan. “It speaks to our program. It speaks to what it means to be a Buckeye. And we wanted to take this rivalry game back this year.”
Ohio State trailed 6–0 early, which was unfamiliar territory for the now 12–0 Buckeyes. Adversity hit early, and the Buckeyes showed they could handle it. They went into halftime leading 17–9 thanks to their strong defense and a well-balanced offense. Julian Sayin rebounded from an early turnover to throw for 233 yards and three touchdowns in snowy conditions — not a bad outing at all for a Heisman contender from California.
Beating Michigan is one major goal checked off, but everything the Buckeyes want is still in front of them. Ohio State aims to capture its first Big Ten title in half a decade, and the biggest goal of all remains repeating as national champions. Even if fans wanted to see the flag planted — and even if players felt it was justified after last season — the coaching staff made the right call by preventing it.
