Traveling out west to Oregon was always going to be tough for Ohio State and it resulted in a close 32-31 road loss to the Ducks.
While the loss was a disappointment for Ohio State, everything still remains in front of them. A soft opening schedule likely did the Buckeyes no favors. The step up in competition was evident playing Oregon.
Following the first loss of the season for Ohio State, head coach Ryan Day talked on Monday about how the Buckeyes respond to this.
"Coaches, players, everybody in the building's gotta own it,” Day said via Eleven Warriors. “The team that continues to grow, that continues to learn from these types of games is going to be the ones who are strongest at the end."
The Buckeyes gave up just too many chunk plays on defense and was not able to get key stops down the closing stretch of the game. Those are things that Ohio State will have to improve on if they want to win it all.
Ohio State will have this week off before they host Nebraska next week. It is the second of bye weeks for the Buckeyes and it marks the halfway point of their season. Following the Oregon game, it will be another tough environment this time at Penn State.
"Every time you take a loss here at Ohio State, you've got to really stick together,” explained Day. “We talked about that after the game, making sure that's the case. It's all in front of us, but we need to make the adjustments."
The single loss didn’t hurt the Buckeyes as much as it would any other year. Thanks to the expanded College Football Playoff format, we will see two-loss and potentially even three-loss teams getting in. Still, the Buckeyes need to respond and take care of the rest of their Big Ten schedule.
