Expectations will be as high as they’ve ever been in Columbus for the 2024 college football season. With all the Buckeyes are returning and what they brought in, the expectation is that this team not making it to a National Championship game would be a disappointment.
The reason that Ohio State fell short of reaching the College Football Playoff in 2024 was the inability to get over the hump against Michigan. For the third straight season in 2023, the Buckeyes fell to Michigan. It was the first time since 1998 that Michigan had taken three straight games in the rivalry.
Now, oddsmakers believe that the tide is going to shift in favor of the Buckeyes. According to FanDuel, Ohio State is a -9.5 favorite against the Wolverines in 2024 and the over/under sits at 47.5. The Buckeyes will be back at home hosting the Wolverines this fall.
Las Vegas has taken into account all of the changes that have happened to Michigan, as well as what the Buckeyes have done. Jim Harbaugh is gone from Ann Arbor and so is J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, Roman Wilson, and most of the offensive line. Additionally, Michigan is replacing both coordinators.
Ohio State was able to retain players like Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, Denzel Burke, Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson, Tyliek Williams, and Lathan Ransom. All of these players had draftable grades early in the process, before deciding to go back to Ohio State.
The Buckeyes were not impacted by any hard transfers and brought in Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, Caleb Downs, and Julian Sayin in the transfer portal. The biggest coaching staff change for the Buckeyes was adding Chip Kelly to be the offensive coordinator.
Ryan Day has struggled to beat Michigan and that has to change if he is going to be the long term guy in Columbus like he wants to be. With the expanded College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes could lose to the Wolverines and still get in, but that loss would perhaps be the pitchfork in Day’s time in Columbus if he didn’t go on to win a national title.
If Vegas odds are your thing and you’re a Buckeye fan, you have to feel good about The Game in 2024. If you are a Michigan fan, you may be just a bit worried.
