There were plenty of ranked teams that lost in Week 8 of the college football season, so the Ohio State Buckeyes have to feel even better about their win over the Wisconsin Badgers.

Ohio State dominated its way to a 34-0 road victory and will now enter its second bye week before returning home to host the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes held Wisconsin to just 144 total yards while piling up nearly 500 themselves. Still, Ohio State could have run the ball better than the 98 rushing yards it managed, and one special teams hiccup left head coach Ryan Day less than pleased.

Ryan Day calls out Ohio State’s big error vs. Wisconsin

“We had the special teams breakdown [on the fake punt], which we can’t have happen,” Day said after the game. “That can cost you a game. That was ridiculous. We know what our issues are, and we have to continually work on them to get them better.”

Day said he wouldn’t go into too much detail about the specific problems, not wanting to give future opponents any extra information. But the Buckeyes surrendered a 20-yard run to Wisconsin punter Sean West on a fourth-and-19 early in the fourth quarter.

Ohio State had one clear shot to stop West but missed, allowing him to fall across the first-down line. It was the biggest miscue of the game — one that didn’t matter in this blowout but could loom large in tighter matchups down the road.

Ohio State posted its second shutout of the season on Saturday and is holding opponents to just 5.9 points per game through seven contests. The Buckeyes have had to find learning moments even in lopsided wins — something that’s not always easy when everything seems to be clicking. But if Ohio State wants to repeat, and it knows what that takes, there are still areas for improvement. Special teams play remains one of the biggest.
