A quarterback competition is nothing new for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and that’s exactly what’s happening once again heading into the 2025 season.
Ryan Day has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to choosing his quarterback in Columbus. Time and again, quarterbacks have found success under his leadership, and even when things didn’t go perfectly with Kyle McCord, he still put together a solid season.
Sophomore Julian Sayin is battling junior Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job to open the season against the Texas Longhorns on Aug. 30. Day was asked Tuesday about what Sayin brings to the table, and his response was promising.
Ryan Day Gets Real About Sophomore QB Julian Sayin
Sayin is considered the favorite to win the job and is the more talented passer of the two. Kienholz brings some unteachable moxie, but Sayin’s arm talent is something special.
“There’s a lot to like. He’s very smart. Makes quick decisions. The ball comes out of his hand. He’s accurate. I think he’s got good movement, good quickness, he’s got twitch — you know, in his lower half — but also in his upper half,” Day said Tuesday. “Remember how quick the ball used to come out of Dwayne’s [Haskins] hands? It’s similar with Julian. He’s building more and more command on the field. Those are all reasons to like him. And he’s improved. He wants to be good. He knows what it takes.”
The late Dwayne Haskins was a standout quarterback at Ohio State, throwing for 50 touchdowns and 4,831 passing yards in the 2018 season. The Buckeyes would be thrilled to get that kind of production this fall with Jeremiah Smith on the roster.
Expectations are always sky-high for Ohio State quarterbacks — it doesn’t matter if you’re a freshman or a fifth-year senior. Things will move fast for the Buckeyes on Aug. 30 when Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns come to town. Day knows he needs to make the right choice. Don’t be surprised if Sayin is named the starter within the next 10 to 14 days.
