The Ohio State Buckeyes have plenty on their plate to handle over the next few weeks with the College Football Playoff approaching.

Ohio State won’t be in action until Dec. 31 when it takes on the winner of Miami and Texas A&M. Between now and then, the Buckeyes have work to do on their coaching staff, as well as preparing for the transfer portal to open. We are in the final games of Brian Hartline’s tenure in Columbus, with him set to go to South Florida, and replacing him is key.

Ohio State has reportedly interviewed the first candidate to replace Brian Hartline

According to ESPN Baton Rouge’s Matt Moscana, who covers the LSU Tigers, Ohio State has interviewed LSU co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton. Hankton has been with the Tigers since 2022 as the wide receivers coach and has helped develop players like Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas. It is unclear what exact job title Ohio State has interviewed Hankton for, but wide receivers coach is likely part of it.

Ohio State could make someone like Hankton co-OC as well, so that would be something to watch. The 44-year-old is a New Orleans native who played with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers between the years of 2003-2008. Hankton got his coaching start at Dartmouth in 2012, where he coached wide receivers for three years before taking the same position at Vanderbilt. Hankton coached wide receivers at Georgia from 2018-2021.

With Lane Kiffin taking over at LSU, there was no sure word that Hankton will be staying on his staff with the Tigers. Hankton is a proven wide receivers coach who could fill that role in Columbus and ideally continue what the Buckeyes have done at the wide receiver position. This is just the first interview made public, as Ryan Day is likely to interview several candidates for the vital role.
