Ryan Day has a firm reminder for the college football world on QB Julian Sayin ahead of the College Football Playoff
Ohio State’s quarterback was fourth in the Heisman race with his best football ahead of him.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have their biggest goal in front of them with the College Football Playoff and they’re going to need a big run from QB Julian Sayin through these games if they want to repeat.
Sayin finished fourth in the Heisman race over the weekend behind Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza, Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia, and Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love. Sayin was the only first-year starter in contention for the Heisman, and that’s a major green flag for the Buckeyes going forward.
Ryan Day knows Julian Sayin’s best is still ahead of him
“Julian is just getting started,” Day said during the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday. “Like, Julian is a first-year starter in a time where the guys who get invited to New York are multiple-year players — guys who have played a lot of football.”
This is Julian’s first year playing football, and to see the way he’s taken this first year, with everything that comes with being the quarterback at Ohio State. Handling it with humility, he’s got a lot of football ahead of him, not just this year, but down the road, and I’m really proud of him.”
Sayin has thrown for 3,326 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and six interceptions in his first year as a starter. It isn’t often that a redshirt freshman gets to New York for the Heisman ceremony, but Sayin was that good this season for the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s one loss came to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship, otherwise, Sayin was unblemished as a starter this season.
The former Alabama transfer will be in Columbus for at least one more season as the Buckeyes’ starter. Sayin isn’t eligible for the NFL draft until 2027 following his redshirt sophomore season. Ohio State will return players like Jeremiah Smith, Bo Jackson, and Isaiah West as playmakers on offense next season.
Sayin already has a win over Michigan under his belt, something that C.J. Stroud, Kyle McCord, and Will Howard were unable to do. Now, he has a chance to help the Buckeyes repeat for the first time ever and it’ll take three more wins to do it.
