Six years to the day, the Ohio State Buckeyes have finally taken control of the rivalry with the Michigan Wolverines once again. Ohio State traveled to Ann Arbor and handed the Wolverines a 27-9 loss to move to 12-0 on the season. With the win, the Buckeyes advance to the Big Ten Championship next weekend, where they will face the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers.

Ryan Day has ended his losing streak against the Wolverines at last

The Buckeyes may have won a National Championship last season, but there was still one lingering cloud over Day’s time in Columbus: his inability to beat the Wolverines. Ohio State had lost four straight to Michigan prior to today, with the 2020 matchup canceled during the COVID-19 season. Day’s only previous win over Michigan came in his first year as head coach back in 2019.

Things didn’t start perfectly for Ohio State. After allowing an opening-drive field goal, Julian Sayin’s second pass of the day was intercepted in Michigan territory, leading to another Wolverines field goal. Trailing 6-0, the Buckeyes finally got going with a 35-yard touchdown from Sayin to Jeremiah Smith early in the second quarter to take the lead — and that’s all they needed to settle in.

Ohio State carried a 17-9 lead into halftime and opened the second half with a 50-yard deep-ball touchdown to Carnell Tate to stretch the margin. The Buckeyes showcased the well-balanced offensive attack they strive for, finding success both on the ground and through the air. After his early mistake, Sayin settled in and delivered a strong performance going 19-of-26 for 233 yards and three touchdowns to the one interception. Freshman RB Bo Jackson did the most damage on the ground, finishing with 122 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

Day is now 82-10 as the head coach in Columbus and 2-4 against the Wolverines. This second win over Michigan was a massive one for the Buckeyes — a game they absolutely had to have. Ohio State rebounded from early adversity and checked off their biggest regular-season goal. Doing it in convincing fashion makes it even sweeter, and there’s zero question who the best team in the country is right now.
