’We’ll see this week’ – Ryan Day may be on the brink of throwing a curveball at Ohio State’s starting offense ahead of Texas game
The Buckeyes still have some key decisions to make on the offensive line and it looks like they’re coming.
We are less than three weeks away from the Ohio State Buckeyes opening their 2025 season by hosting the Texas Longhorns.
Fall camp has been underway for a couple of weeks in Columbus, and most of the focus has been on the quarterback battle. However, that’s not the only key competition on offense.
Junior Austin Siereveld has spent much of the offseason working primarily at right tackle and right guard, and he may be the biggest riser on the team. Now, it appears Siereveld is poised to be the Buckeyes’ starting left tackle.
“We usually don’t set the depth chart until a couple weeks out,” head coach Ryan Day said on Monday. “So we’ll wait until then to actually set the depth chart. But right now, Austin’s working exclusively at left tackle.”
Siereveld was named an Iron Buckeye this offseason and seems poised to be a team captain. Luke Montgomery is expected to start at left guard, with Carson Hinzman at center. Tegra Tshabola is the leader in the clubhouse at right guard. The big question is: who will start at right tackle?
Two transfers are battling for key starting job at Ohio State
Rice transfer Ethan Onianwa started at left tackle in the spring and early in fall camp, but has since shifted to right tackle, where he’s facing competition.
“We’re seeing Austin take a lot of snaps at left tackle, and we’re seeing Phil take a lot of snaps at right tackle. And Ethan is swinging and doing a good job. So we’ll see—by this week, we’ll have more snaps, more information, and go from there.”
Day was asked if Minnesota transfer Phillip Daniels could win the right tackle job over Onianwa, which would be a surprise given the projected line a month ago.
“We’ll see this week. We’ll see,” Day said. “There’s enough on film to believe we can win with both guys. Who ends up starting—we’ll see.”
