Ohio State made a big decision around this time last year to bring in QB Will Howard from Kansas State to be the next player under center in Columbus.
That decision worked out better than Ohio State ever could have dreamed of. Howard became a National Champion with the Buckeyes last night when they beat Notre Dame and etched his name into Ohio State history forever.
As a graduate transfer, Howard unfortunately only gets one year in Columbus. That one season as the Buckeyes quarterback is going to have a big impact on Howard’s draft value.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day took a pretty strong stance on Day Tuesday morning regarding his future.
"When Will's feet are right, he is as good as anybody I've been around. His accuracy, his ability to see the way he commands the team, the work he puts in," Day said, via Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors. "I think the thing that nobody is probably going to understand how much credit he deserves is how much he can take on. I don't think there was … to say 90 percent of the calls that went in the other day had two or three plays into it, and he's calling a play or two in the huddle and then checking the play at the line of scrimmage, that's NFL material right there. That's special.”
Whichever organization decides to draft Will is going to get, like, a pro day one he's walking in the door."
Howard completed his senior season at Ohio State completing 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions. Howard added 226 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground as well. Prior to coming to Columbus, Howard’s best season at Kansas State he threw for 2,610 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Working with Day and Chip Kelly, the new National Champion became a more complete quarterback and was especially strong when it mattered most. Howard cleared 285 yards three times in the playoff and threw eight touchdowns with just two interceptions.
When Kyle McCord transferred to Syracuse, it was the best decision for him. Ohio State found the best replacement they could. Howard was a good leader and his strong performance on the field made it all worth it.
Howard’s recent success could make him a middle-round quarterback when the draft rolls around. He is an experienced quarterback with a good football IQ and a strong frame. Expect Howard to land on his feet in the NFL.
