Ryan Day’s past quote is looking very questionable at best after Ohio State’s season ends with a loss to Miami in the Cotton Bowl

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ run at trying to repeat as national champions for the first time in school history is over.

Ohio State ends 2025 on the wrong side of a 24-14 loss to the Miami Hurricanes in the Cotton Bowl. The No. 2 Buckeyes are one-and-done in the playoffs just a year after winning it all. Ohio State’s offensive issues that were there against the Indiana Hoosiers reared their head against the Hurricanes.

Ryan Day’s statement never came true about the Ohio State offense

Back in November, Ohio State’s head coach got into how the offense operates and how they value efficiency. Ohio State’s pace of play is the slowest you’ll see in college football, and it does that purposely. The Buckeyes were stale on offense against Miami, and the gas was never turned up like Day said it would. Ohio State may have had 332 yards of offense, but they scored just 14 points.

“Efficiency is what we’re after,” Day said in early November. “That’s how you control the game. When it’s time to turn up the gas, we will.”

Ohio State never turned up the gas on offense. A game after scoring just 10 points in the loss to Indiana, the Buckeyes were held scoreless in the first half against Miami. Ohio State went four straight quarters between the Big Ten Championship and the loss to Miami without scoring.

Negative three rushing yards and 1-of-6 on third down in the first half got the Buckeyes behind the sticks, and they never recovered. Ohio State gifted Miami six points by way of a Julian Sayin interception that was returned for a touchdown in the first half.

The last month of football has gone a lot differently for the Buckeyes than the regular season did. Ohio State was 12-0 during the regular season and went unblemished until that loss to Indiana. Now, the Buckeyes end their season with a loss in the Cotton Bowl.
