Ryan Day’s admission tells partly why the Ohio State Buckeyes are at the top of the college football world
The Buckeyes have built a great environment that goes to show why they’re at the top.
The Ohio State Buckeyes couldn’t be in a better position with just one game left before the big one against the Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State has breezed through its schedule and sits at 10-0, holding the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff as a result.
Losing both coordinators and 14 players to the NFL Draft back in April hasn’t held the Buckeyes back. In fact, they look even better. Julian Sayin has been everything the Buckeyes hoped he could be, and Arvell Reese’s rise to stardom has been huge for a defense that already features Caleb Downs.
Ryan Day’s latest comments are just one example of why Ohio State is rolling right now
“When you have to tell guys to get in the locker room and you have to run guys off the field, that’s when you know you’ve got something going,” Day said recently, via Eleven Warriors. “If they’re the first ones out the minute practice is over — they’re running to their car, grabbing a bite to eat, they’re leaving a patch in the parking lot — that’s not good.
“But these guys, they want to be in here. It’s late, and they’re getting treatment, and we’re watching film, and I’ll go use the restroom and these guys are still in the locker room hanging out. Or I walk out on the field, and they’re sitting on the bench talking about what’s going on. Or I see an older guy grab a younger guy and just sit down.”
Ryan Day has been the head coach in Columbus since the 2018 season and has posted an 80-10 record in that span. Day has lost his last four matchups against Michigan, but outside of that, he has taken care of business. Winning a national championship last season — the program’s first in a decade — checked off a major goal. And with the way this year has started, the Buckeyes are positioned to make another run at a repeat.
Urban Meyer elevated the Buckeyes, but it’s hard to argue that Day hasn’t taken Ohio State to yet another level. The environment around the program has never been better, and that has translated directly to success on the field. Next up is a date with Rutgers on Saturday — then Day gets another chance to fix his biggest lingering blemish: beating Michigan.
