Ohio State is in the middle of something that’s become familiar under head coach Ryan Day — a quarterback battle for the starting job.

The Buckeyes will have a new starting quarterback in 2025 for the third consecutive season, following former Kansas State transfer Will Howard’s one-year stint in Columbus and Kyle McCord’s lone year as the starter before him.

Now, heading into fall camp, Day still calls this year’s QB competition “neck-and-neck.”

Ryan Day watching for ‘Gold’ and ‘Iron’ Buckeyes from summer workouts

“I think both guys have gotten stronger. [It will be] really interesting to see once we get done with our summer program with Mick [Marotti] next week, you know, who are Gold and who’s Iron Buckeyes. That’ll be big for the leadership,” Day said Tuesday at Big Ten Football Media Days.

“But guys have taken leadership roles, and they’ve been throwing with the wide receivers. I ask those guys all the time, and they like both of them. So we’re going to put them in as many competitive situations as we possibly can to figure out who handles that the best. Because, you know, we’ve got to be on point Week 1. We can’t be messing around.”

Next week, when Mick Marotti reveals the top performers from summer workouts, it could include one of the quarterbacks — and potentially shake up the current status of the battle. Sayin ended spring with a strong spring game, but he and Kienholz were closely matched throughout the offseason.

Kienholz, a multi-sport athlete, is in his third season in the system and brings more experience. Sayin, meanwhile, is a former five-star recruit and Elite 11 winner who likely wouldn’t be in Columbus if not for Nick Saban’s retirement from Alabama.

Day has waited until fall camp to name a starting quarterback several times during his tenure. It looks like we’re headed down that path once again.
