Ohio State is heading into a matchup against Texas next week where they can punch their ticket to the National Championship.
When the Buckeyes take on the Longhorns in Arlington, Texas in the Cotton Bowl, Texas is going to be led by a quarterback that is very familiar to the team in Columbus.
Quinn Ewers spent his first season in college at Ohio State before deciding to transfer. On Friday, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day reflected on when he offered Ewers a scholarship to Columbus.
“He was one of the first eighth graders that I ever offered,” Day said to the media. “He was in our camp here in the Woody, and I saw a young … he’s a boy at the time, who just had a tremendous release. I remember grabbing him and grabbing his dad, and said, man, you got a bright future.
“I don't know if this is good or bad, but we’re going to offer you a scholarship to Ohio State, even in eighth grade. Again, I don’t know if that’s legal or not but we did.”
Ewers was the No. 1 ranked player in the class of 2021 and committed to the Buckeyes over a boatload of other programs. The only problem was that Ewers got to Columbus during C.J. Stroud’s first year starting. Stroud was again the starter in 2022 and he was excellent. Ohio State had no reason to uproot Stroud, so Ewers transferred before the 2022 season so that he could get on the field.
“He decided to come really in the middle of preseason camp for us. And so it was a little bit strange. But again, with college football, you look to adapt the best you can. And then C.J. really had a great season that season, and (Ewers) decided he really wanted to play,” Day explained.
Ewers was solid in 2022 with the Longhorns and was even better in 2023 when he threw six picks to 22 touchdowns. So far this season, Ewers has 29 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and 3,189 yards on a 66 completion percentage. As you can see from Day’s comments, the Buckeyes are not going to underestimate his ability coming in.
Texas is familiar with Will Howard, who was at Kansas State in the Big 12 for four seasons before coming to Columbus. The Cotton Bowl is going to be two teams squaring off with quarterbacks that the other side is no stranger to.
