Ryan Day receives major credit from a former Michigan Wolverines great who is just calling it like he sees it
Day is earning respect from a player who once did damage to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ryan Day finally got over the big hump last season, leading Ohio State to its first national championship in about a decade. The Buckeyes’ run after losing to Michigan was special — but none of that matters now.
Beating Michigan remains a significant challenge for Ohio State, and it’s a hurdle they’ll be desperate to clear this season. For now, though, the focus has to be on the Texas Longhorns and the massive Week 1 test that awaits.
Former Michigan star tight end Jake Butt recently got a good look at the Buckeyes during practice, and he came away with high praise for Day — a great sign heading into the season.
“Last thing that stood out is the competition. I had the thought early in drills watching Mylan Graham compete against [Caleb] Downs, and [Devin] Sanchez against the WRs. You have NFL-level veterans competing against your young talent,” Butt explained. “That forces the young talent to be at their best every day. They have to learn, grow, and adapt. Spread throughout the roster, that’s how you compete and reload every year. Program is in a really good place, and that’s credit to Ryan Day.”
At Ohio State, if you’re good enough, you’ll play as a true freshman. Jeremiah Smith proved that to the extreme last season, topping 1,300 receiving yards. Select freshmen are able to step in and hold their own against established college players, and the culture Day has built in Columbus makes that possible.
Starting 70-10 as a head coach is remarkable — and that’s where Day stands now. Once again, Ohio State boasts a loaded roster, and this group will aim to replicate the magic of last year’s championship run.
