Ohio State has Tennessee ahead of them in the College Football Playoff on Saturday, but they also have some focus on the transfer portal.
On Wednesday, the Buckeyes picked up their first transfer portal commitment. Minnesota offensive tackle Phillip Daniels committed to the Buckeyes and is expected to be a starter for them next season likely.
Ohio State added seven players on scholarship through the transfer portal all last offseason. Ryan Day revealed that number is going to change during his media availability on Wednesday.
“I think every year it's become probably a higher percentage just across the country,” Day stated. “For us, it will probably be the same thing this year. I think last year we ended up [with] seven or eight guys. It'll probably be higher this year. Yeah, I think every year that number is going to go up.”
Ohio State added multiple players who have made a big impact. Will Howard, Quinshon Judkins, Caleb Downs, and Seth McLaughlin were big additions. The Buckeyes will likely start Julian Sayin at quarterback next year, who was one of three Alabama players to transfer to Columbus.
Day remained adamant that Ohio State is not going to be built through the portal. That is why you see them take a 25-man class from high school each year.
“As we've talked about before, this sustainability of a program has to be built through high school recruiting and then development and then retention of your roster, which that's not going to change here,” Day explained. [With] that being said, we know that there are some positional needs that we've got to get addressed, and we're going to work hard to make sure that we do it.”
Ohio State has to address the offensive line with three players possibly being the route they go from the portal. The Buckeyes could use defensive line depth, as well as an experienced running back. Expect the portal additions to really pick up as the College Football Playoff goes on and more schools become more active.
Each year we see a wild frenzy when the transfer portal comes around. That is going to be no different this year. The Buckeyes are going to both lose and gain players via the portal. Expect Ohio State to be a bit more aggressive in it.
