Ohio State Buckeyes took a loss this past weekend that was totally out of their control despite beating Minnesota
Ohio State’s best win no longer looks as good as it once did.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are a 5-0 football team and look like they will have a legit shot at perhaps winning it all in the College Football Playoff this season. Ohio State’s defense is elite and appears to be one of the best in the country. Julian Sayin is coming along nicely at quarterback, and he has plenty of weapons around him. In the win against Minnesota over the weekend, it was Carnell Tate who went off with nine catches for 183 receiving yards.
The latest addition of the AP Poll, following Week 6 of the college football season, has the Buckeyes remaining at No. 1 after blowing out the Golden Gophers, 42-3. However, the latest rankings aren’t all good news for the Buckeyes.
Texas being ranked no longer is a hit to Ohio State’s resume
To this point in the season, the best win for the Buckeyes was the season opener against the Longhorns. Ohio State won the game 14-7, which was a defensive battle. Since then, Texas and Arch Manning haven’t been world beaters, and they were beaten 29-21 by the Florida Gators over the weekend. With Texas unranked, Ohio State’s best win no longer looks all that great. There is plenty of season left, and Texas could turn it around, but that’s what it is at this point.
Ohio State is on the road in Week 7 at No. 17 Illinois, and that will be a chance to pick up a quality win over a ranked opponent. Luke Altmyer will be one of the better quarterbacks Ohio State sees this season, and that’ll be a good test for down the road. Washington could be a team that is ranked in the future, and the Buckeyes have a win over them already, as well, on the road.
As long as the Buckeyes continue to take care of business on the field and keep their dominant level of play going, a resume isn’t going to matter all that much. Penn State and Michigan are the two toughest games remaining this season, and the Nittany Lions are no longer ranked after two straight losses to Oregon and UCLA. If Ohio State can go through the regular season unblemished, it’ll play in the Big Ten championship and already be a lock for the CFP.
Ryan Day is big on taking it one game at a time, and that’s how college football has to be with the chaos that can happen week to week. Texas losing for the second time this season is a hit to the Buckeyes. However, Ohio State controls whether that will end up mattering or not.
