Ohio State had some players step up against Penn State that we haven’t seen a ton from this season; one even scored a touchdown in the 20-13 win over the Nittany Lions.
Ryan Day gave a glowing review of sophomore wide receiver Brandon Inniss, who scored his first touchdown of the season against Penn State, and it proved to be a big one.
Coming into the game, the former five-star recruit had not played a ton on offense this season and has been used primarily as a punt returner. Early in the second quarter, Will Howard hit Inniss for a 21-yard touchdown on a cross route that Penn State was able to catch him on.
“Brandon’s someone that brings energy every day,” said on Thursday. “He caught that pass, and the whole sideline was on fire. He just comes out and works every day; he’s not selfish. He’s not a guy who says, ‘I need this many touches or this many plays.’
The thing about Brandon was, I don’t think he got many reps at that play this week. I think Emeka got a bunch of those reps. So, for him to put that on the field without physically doing it a bunch was a testament to his preparation. The meetings, the walkthroughs, because that is a big part of it.”
As a freshman last season, Inniss had just one catch, and it was a 58-yard touchdown. It is hard to get on the field as a freshman wide receiver at Ohio State, especially as a freshman. Every once in a while a generational player comes through at the position like Jeremiah Smith, who can step in and be the best wide receiver on the team that already has NFL guys Day 1.
Inniss is the fourth wide receiver option for the Buckeyes this season. Smith is their top target with 678 yards, and Emeka Egbuka has 577 yards this season. Carnell Tate is the team’s third option at 349 yards, and Inniss has put up 125 yards on 10 catches.
The 6-foot sophomore has proven to be an unselfish player that is willing to step into any role and fill it, whether it is special teams or on offense as a depth option for the time being. Don’t be surprised if for that reason, Inniss becomes a huge part of the offensive game plan at some point in his college career.
