Quarterback contracts around the NFL have exploded recently and we are nearing $60 million a year being given out.

Such a thing is very good news for a former Ohio State quarterback who is currently on track to see a huge payday in a couple of seasons when it is his turn to cash in.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will need to build off of his Rookie of the Year performance that he had last season, but if he can he is setting himself up for generational welts in a big way down the road.

Recent quarterbacks to sign huge NFL contracts

  • Patrick Mahomes (2020)
  • Dak Prescott (2021)
  • Josh Allen (2021)
  • Kyler Murray (2022)
  • Justin Herbert (2023)
  • Lamar Jackson (2023)
  • Jalen Hurts (2023)
  • Joe Burrow (2023)
  • Trevor Lawrence (2024)
  • Tua Tagovailoa (2024)
  • Jordan Love (2024)

Just a couple of days ago, the Green Bay Packers gave Love $220 million over four seasons. The $55 million in that deal per year is a nice jump from the $45 million a year that Mahomes signed for back in 2020. With the continued growth in media deals across the NFL, the expectation is that these contracts will only continue to grow at a rapid rate.

Stroud was special as a rookie and led the Houston Texans to a playoff win against the Cleveland Browns in Year 1. In 15 starts, Stroud threw for 4,108 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to go along with just five interceptions. The Ohio State product brought poise to the game that we do not often see as a rookie and it was a thrill to watch.

If the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott do not soon reach a deal on an extension, he very well could reach free agency next March and clear $60 million on the open market. Three quarterbacks are currently making $55 million a year and we will keep watching that number grow. For the 2024 season, the cap grew $30.6 million from last season, which is the biggest jump in about 30 years.

Lawrence and Burrow are both making $55 million but Burrow’s deal came before the cap jump, so he took up 24.47 percent in space at the signing compared to Lawrence accounting for 21.93 percent when he signed.

Stroud still has three seasons on his rookie contract plus a fifth-year option. We likely will not see him signing a new contract until before the 2026-2027 NFL season, which will be his fourth in the NFL. If Stroud can build off of last season and take another step forward, he could cross $65 million with ease and target $70 million a year on his first non-rookie contract.

Of course, Stroud needs health to stay on his way to get to that point. But if his rookie season showed us anything, it is that he hit the league running and is going to be a star. Maybe … just maybe that is good for recruiting the quarterback position in Columbus.
