Texas A&M has been chasing after NFL-caliber athletes and people on the recruiting trail since Mike Elko took over the program, as he head coach identified this as a shortcoming in past years. Going after top prospects with a great recruiting ranking has failed the Aggies far too often, so Elko's shift to more of a holistic approach could work better.
If what Texas A&M did under Jimbo Fisher didn't work, maybe Elko's strategy of poaching talent from bluebloods will. On Wednesday, Elko landed the commitment of Storm Miller.
Miller is a four-star linebacker from Strongsville, Ohio, and was certainly projected to land with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder could've stayed in Ohio or even within the Big Ten, but opted for the Aggies over Michigan and Wisconsin as foes.
He added, “Aggie Nation I’m home!"
Another factor could be that Ohio State added two high-end linebacker recruits in Riley Pettijohn and Tarvos Alford. The pathway to playing time won't be as difficult at Texas A&M.
Elko hasn't brought in a ton of second-level help in his very short time with the team. Jordan Lockhart and Tristan Jernigan will be third-year players by the time Miller will be on campus.
This is a big addition, not only to take a prospect who was two hours from the defending national champs, but also because it's a position of need. We'll see if Elko can keep Miller locked in through the end of the year.
