The 12-team College Football Playoff has given us a unique look at programs hosting first-round games. Though the first-round games were mostly lopsided, it was still a cool experience.
Ohio State hosting Tennessee was expected to be the closest of the games, however, the Buckeyes steamrolled to a 42-17 win over the Vols.
The game between the Buckeyes and Vols was the one with the most even crowd. There were thought to be at least 30,000 Vols fans in Ohio Stadium last Saturday, which was an impressive sight. Even former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was a bit caught off guard by it.
“First time I’ve ever seen that in that stadium [and I was ] a little alarmed by it,” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. “But the Buckeyes came out, what was it, 42-10? It was worse than that.”
The Vols fans in the stadium didn’t make a difference, as Ohio State scored 21 of their 42 points in the opening quarter. It was the fast start on offense that the Buckeyes had been looking to have. Any energy that the Tennessee crowd brought was quickly taken away.
Tennessee fans were able to take advantage of the ticketing system that allowed them to get so many tickets. Ohio State students being out on break adree finals did not help the crowd. Still, it was likely a 70/30 crowd for the Buckeyes and the majority of the Tennessee fans had cleared by late in the fourth quarter.
Ohio State won’t play another game at home this season with Oregon next up in the Rose Bowl. Buckeyes fans travel well, so they should show up in swarms to the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes are getting their second chance against the Ducks, as they fell earlier in the season by a point on the road.
A tip of the cap to Vols fans who made the trip north in big numbers. However, it was all for nothing at the end of the day because the Buckeyes moved on.
