Urban Meyer revealed a bit of good news about Ohio State football’s new coaching addition, and how it works with Ryan Day
Urban Meyer has some insight on how the Ohio State offense will work after Ryan Day’s addition from the NFL.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have made big moves this offseason for both their roster and coaching staff.
Ohio State’s most notable coaching addition is former Pittsburgh Steelers OC Arthur Smith set to call plays for the Buckeyes as the new offensive coordinator in Columbus.
Smith joining the Buckeyes gives them their second NFL coordinator alongside Matt Patricia. It’s a big investment for Ohio State and a big decision for Ryan Day.
Urban Meyer provides insight into how Arthur Smith and Ryan Day will mesh
With Ohio State bringing in an NFL coordinator, the question is just how much will change within the current offense?
“Ryan is pretty well set in his offense,” Meyer said recently on The Triple Option podcast. “That’s the same offensive terminology we used when I was there, and Chip Kelly changed it a little bit … I remember asking Ryan about it.”
The minute you hire a big-name coordinator, the coordinator is gonna run his stuff. So you’re gonna have 100 people in that program now learning new terminology, unless there was an agreement. Whenever I hired a coordinator, I would give them the playbook and say, ‘This is what we’re gonna run.’ I usually elevated my guys and we ran it because I wanted to know what was going on.”
Meyer went on to reveal how Day and Smith will work together.
“It’s been pretty good,” Meyer said of Day and Smith getting acclimated early. “I think there’s probably gonna be a little bit of a mesh of what he’s done before.”
Ohio State meshing together the offense between Smith and Day is the most likely outcome. The run game and blocking scheme could use some overhauling by Smith, while the Buckeyes continue to air it out with Day’s passing game. Ohio State’s two biggest playmakers should be WR Jeremiah Smith and RB Bo Jackson.
The Buckeyes saw how Patricia’s addition worked out when he replaced Jim Knowles. Ohio State’s hope is now that Brian Hartline is gone, they’re better off with Smith and Cortez Hankton. Time will tell us the answer to that.
