Former Ohio State HC Urban Meyer gives honest opinion on Ryan Day’s decision with Brian Hartline ahead of the Cotton Bowl
Ryan Day made a big decision with Brian Hartline ahead of the Buckeyes playing Miami and now Urban has weighed in.
The Ohio State Buckeyes’ last time out was a 13-10 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship. The offense struggling so badly looked even worse because offensive coordinator Brian Hartline took his first head coaching job just days before.
Hartline is remaining with the Buckeyes through their College Football Playoff run and that’ll start with the Miami Hurricanes on New Year’s Eve. Though, Hartline’s role is going to be different the rest of the way. Ryan Day has already made the decision to take back offensive play-calling from Hartline. That decision was undoubtedly a rough one but something the Buckeyes felt was best to be able to repeat.
Urban Meyer weighs in on Ryan Day’s decision
“Ryan Day’s an elite play-caller,” Meyer said earlier in the week on The Collin Cowherd Show. “So there will be no drop-off. He’s knee-deep in the offense, and I think he made the right decision here. No offense to Brian Hartline, but Brian Hartline’s the head coach of South Florida. Ryan has been a play-caller for most of his career. He certainly was for me, and I witnessed it… He’s fantastic.”
Day was first hired at Ohio State as the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator during the 2017 season and he was the full-time offensive coordinator by the 2018 season. Meyer knows a thing or two about success in college football and he felt strongly that Day was the guy that he needed to leave the Ohio State program to. The Buckeyes’ head coach is 82-11 as the man in Columbus and he called plays for five of the seven seasons that he’s been the guy.
Ohio State simply can’t afford for Hartline to fail as the play caller due to too much being on his plate. Hartline is still going to be involved in the offensive plan, as is tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator Keenan Bailey. At the end of the day and when the pads start popping, it’s going to be Day calling the plays into QB Julian Sayin for the Miami game, and however long the Buckeyes last.
Meyer feeling that this is the right move should be a bit of a relief for Buckeyes fans who are worried about Day’s decision. Ohio State can’t afford the redzone woes that showed up against Indiana, or else their last game of the season will be against Miami. It’s really that simple.
