Ohio State and Tennessee will clash on Saturday in the first round of the College Football Playoff. When they get out there at 8 p.m. in Columbus, it is going to be a cold one.

Much of the talk leading up to the game has been about Tennessee coming up north from SEC land to play a football game in the winter climate.

Josh Heupel has downplayed the weather heading into the game, as you would expect a competitor would. Heupel is from South Dakota himself, so the cold weather may not be all that bad for him.

“It’s a June day in South Dakota. It’s going to be great football weather. A couple of weeks ago we played in 30-degree weather,” Heupel said on Monday. “We practice in the morning, it’s still chill, as cold as it will be around this area. At the end of the day, you get between the white lines, the weather doesn’t matter. The temperature doesn’t. We’ll be ready to go play. It’ll be a lot of fun.”

Around the time of the game, it is expected to be in the high teens. You can expect that with the windchill the temperature is going to be single digits. For folks who aren’t used to the cold, that is going to be a very long three hours.

This is the latest we’ve seen a game played in Columbus. With the loss to Michigan, Ohio State received the chance to host a first-round College Football Playoff game. Only time will tell if the cold weather actually has an impact on the Vols.

At the end of the day, the better football team on that day is going to win the game. And that is exactly how it should be.
