Ohio State held their pro day on Wednesday and 17 Buckeyes in all were front and center for more than 140 different NFL personnel.
Of the players working out and taking part in drills, much of the attention was on QB Will Howard. Howard played one year in Columbus after spending his first four years of college football at Kansas State. The 6-foot-4 quarterback was able to raise his draft stock a ton on his way to a National Championship season with the Buckeyes.
When it comes to where Howard is going to go in the draft, most folks believe that will come either on late Day 2 or early Day 3 of the draft next month.
Will Howard sounds like he’d love to return to his home state and suit up for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Howard was one of three Buckeyes to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan met with Ohio State running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers stuck around on Tuesday to watch Howard take part in throwing drills at Pro Day.
Being drafted by the Steelers would mean a return to his home state of Pennsylvania for Howard. The Ohio State product comes from Downingtown, Pennsylvania where he attended Downingtown West High School. Following his workout on Wednesday, Howard talked very positively of the Steelers. By default, most Ohio State fans are rooting for either the Cleveland Browns or Cincinnati Bengals. The Steelers landing Howard would put him on the AFC North rival of the NFL teams that most of Buckeye Nation root for.
“Spent some time with them yesterday, coach Tomlin, and coach Smith. I really like those guys [and] it’s close to home for me,” Howard stated. “It’s close to here. There’s a lot of things to like about it, but you never know. Anything can happen, but it’s definitely a great spot.”
The Steelers have a glaring need for a franchise quarterback and they don’t pick inside of the top 20 in the draft. Pittsburgh is in a situation where they’ll need to start a veteran, likely Aaron Rodgers, and develop a quarterback behind him. Howard could potentially be that guy.
At Ohio State, Howard completed 73 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Additionally, Howard added seven rushing touchdowns to his numbers. Howard is a strong leader and the exact player the Buckeyes needed for their National Championship run.
The draft begins on April 24 and Howard will visit with multiple teams before now and then. Expect the Steelers to be a popular mock draft destination between now and then.
