Ohio State’s 2024 football team is an interesting makeup of returning talent that they brought back to Columbus.
The defense specifically returned multiple players that could have gone to the NFL but decided to come back to Columbus.
Name, Image, and Likeness is a big reason for it happening and it has the Buckeyes in a position to compete for a National Championship and perhaps the favorite.
Graduate transfer and likely starting QB Will Howard’s impression of the Buckeyes’ defense is one to hear.
"The competition at practice is awesome,” Howard said on a recent episode of The Bobby Carpenter Show. “Going against that defense made me so much better in the Spring. Coach [Jim] Knowles has obviously a great scheme. He ran it against me at Oklahoma State twice. It was a b****, it was hard to go against, and with the caliber of players they have I mean you don't have to blitz anybody you can just let that front four eat and those guys are going to get home."
Howard spent 2020-2023 with Kansas State and matched up against Oklahoma State while Knowles was there.
Along the defensive line, Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau return to get after the quarterback with Tyleik Willams and Ty Hamilton off the interior. Linebacker Cody Simon, cornerback Denzel Burke, and safety Lathan Ransom all came back for another year with Ohio State.
With all of the players returning, Knowles is entering year No. 3 as the defensive coordinator in Columbus. That means another year for new things to be implemented in the defense to take it to the next level. The expectation is for the defense to undoubtedly be one of the best in the country and it would be a disappointment if they are not.
We are a bit under 100 days until the season begins and we get our first look at the defense that the Buckeyes were able to return. Howard’s impression of the defense may have opponents on the schedule a bit worried.
