Ohio State superstar Jeremiah Smith doesn’t wait long to give Miami Hurricanes some bulletin board material
The Buckeyes’ star wideout becomes the next to give the Canes some early motivation in the playoff.
The Miami Hurricanes had plenty of fuel to notch their first-ever College Football Playoff win on Saturday, upsetting the Texas A&M Aggies 10-3 in College Station. A couple of notable Aggies made some head-scratching comments ahead of the game that gave the Hurricanes’ defense some added motivation for the contest.
Now, it appears as though the Hurricanes will have more material they can post around the football facilities this week in advance of their New Year’s Eve showdown against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal and the Cotton Bowl.
Ohio State star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was asked if there was still animosity between Ohio State and Miami from the 2002 national championship game, and Smith acknowledged there was, and he had a little message for the Hurricane players on top of it.
Jeremiah Smith says of the Hurricanes: ‘We’ve got something for them come New Year’s Eve’
“Oh yeah, for sure, I mean, you see it all over the internet, all over Twitter,” Smith said. “They’re still talking about it twenty years later. They’re still worried about it, but we’ve got something for them come New Year’s Eve.”
Smith also admitted that there could be a little bit of chippiness between him and the Hurricanes given Smith and many Miami players are from South Florida and know each other. Many Miami fans know of Smith’s recruitment, as Miami pushed hard to keep the South Florida native home, but lost out to the Buckeyes on signing day. Smith went on to have one of the greatest true freshman seasons in recent college football history as he helped carry Ohio State through the playoff and on to claim the national championship last season.
However, there’s little reason for anyone to talk ahead of games and give any reason for an opponent to have added motivation. Rueben Bain, Jr. said after the win over Texas A&M that he kept some disrespectful words from Texas A&M players leading up to the game on his phone. He totaled three sacks and four tackles for loss.
We’ll see if Smith’s words give Miami some additional fuel, but with how Bain and his teammates have kept receipts, it’s fairly certain those words are being circled in Coral Gables.
