Oklahoma Sooners continue surprise everyone with their 2026 class time and time again just when it seems they’re done

The Oklahoma Sooners added to their 2026 class, yet again, on Friday. Just when we continue to think that the Sooners’ 2026 class is wrapping up, they flip or add another commit. This time it’s three-star edge rusher Dane Bathurst.
“They have a great program. They have a good locker room. The culture, the people, and they set up their players for success,” Bathurst told Rivals.
OU is on a heater right now when it comes to recruiting. They have recently flipped Johnathan Hatton, a four-star running back who was committed to the Texas A&M Aggies, and have made a few other moves, too. This one may not look huge, but getting Bathurst is big, because they really, really love him.
Sooners get an edge rusher with nice potential in Dane Bathurst
Bathurst is a three-star, but like we have preached so many times, Brent Venables and his staff don’t actually care about star rating. Most football programs are this way, but they actually care more about tape and character, rating than ratings and stats. Do you play the right way, and the way that school needs you to play, and do you have the right character traits that the program needs for their culture?
They feel like they can check yes to both of those questions with Bathurst.
They’re not the same player, but Bathurst reminds me a ton of the Taylor Wein recruitment, in that Wein was a three-tar who some thought was a bit smaller, but was extremely technically sound, and had great motors. Bathurst has the motor, and he’s willing to learn.
And, Bathurst isn’t just extremely small for an edge player, either. He’s currently 6’3 230 pounds, according to Rivals’ profile on him. He could easily fill out after getting in an SEC training facility and weight-lifting program. But this is a huge win nonetheless.
Bathurst was heavily pursued by Purdue, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, and Louisville. Oklahoma thinks he’s an SEC-level player.
