Alabama coach continues a trend that Lane Kiffin started with Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners
Brent Venables and the Sooners are going to play Alabama on the road this weekend.
It seems like Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners have been in the news every week about sign-stealing. First, it was Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin, then some of the Tennessee Volunteers media members and coaches brought it up, and now it’s the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Brent Venables and the Sooners continue to get praise for their elite defensive preparation
“They do a great job. They’re elite information-gatherers. Coach (Venables) has talked for years, and he’s done this for a long time,” Kiffin told reporters before the Ole Miss Rebels played the Sooners.
Kiffin made sure that everyone knew they did it within the parameters of the game.
“I guess coming from Lane, I take it as a compliment? Like, he must have watched our guys be really prepared,” Venables said. “‘Cause that’s who they are, man. They’re relentless. Their detail, the time they spend above and beyond what’s required, that’s the proof of how we’re playing right now. That D-line, how they’re able to dominate physically… But I guess I’ll take that as a kind of a weird compliment. Our guys must’ve looked pretty good on film.”
Kiffin isn’t the only one who’s noticed that.
“They’re good at that, No. 1,” Alabama OC Ryan Grubb said Monday. “No. 2, we’ll be changing everything, so if Coach Venables is listening, just know that they’re all changing. But they do everything within the parameters of the game, though. Nothing illegal about what they do. They’re good at what they do. Certainly have to take that into consideration.”
Oklahoma has maybe the best defense in the SEC, and you could make the case that they have the best defense in the country, if not for the Ohio State Buckeyes. And as Venables said, these are compliments because everything the Sooners do is within the parameters of the game. They just prepare better than anyone else, especially when it comes to film.
The good thing about this matchup with Alabama is that the Sooners won’t have to guess too often on whether or not Bama is running or passing the ball. They have a bad run game, so bad that you can almost guarantee the Crimson Tide is passing the ball on second and long. Alabama will use some of the short, quick passing game stuff to act as its run game.
Regardless, Alabama will definitely be adjusting some things on offense.
“You’ve got to adjust,” Bama head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “I think across the board, across the country, there’s some element of every team doing something. For us, I think our staff does a pretty good job, but you certainly have to make sure you’re always doing your best to change things up. We have huddle and no-huddle formations, and there are a lot of different things we can do. We just got to continue to do what we’ve done, not just this year but years past as well.”
This is a huge game for the Sooners. They win, and they can almost guarantee they’re in the College Football Playoffs. Of course, they still have to beat the Missouri Tigers and the LSU Tigers. They lose, and they will need a lot of things to go their way to qualify as a three-loss team.
