The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a bye week, allowing them to rest after their big-time road win over the Tennessee Volunteers. When teams come off a bye week, they are often more dangerous. And now, this team has to face the Alabama Crimson Tide coming off a bye week. Statistically, Alabama may be the hottest team in the SEC, so the Sooners’ bye week was crucial.

It’s worth mentioning that this bye week was a bit different than the last one, too.

Sooners know this bye week is different than the last one

“I thought our young men had a great mindset during the break. I think we were able to make some improvements on just a few little things we needed to get better at… You have to demand a lot at practice. The bye week, it’s really easy for it to go one of two ways,” offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle told reporters when asked about the differences in bye weeks.

“I thought we were able to do a lot of good things and build off that room [OL]… I think it’s big that in the first bye week, a lot of stuff was up in the air. I thought our kids handled that really well. This bye week was good to handle other things well. We were able to attack this one a lot differently.”

The offense finally has the run game going. They have gotten Xavier Robinson to hit some big-time runs in just about every single game that he’s been the focal point. Now, it’s the passing game that has fallen off. So, it’s Week 11, and there still isn’t a clear identity of what this offense is yet.

Against Alabama, the Sooners will need a combination of the run and pass game if they want to have a legit shot at winning. This bye week, they didn’t have to worry about rushing John Mateer back from a hand surgery. They didn’t have to worry about ensuring the quarterback was ready physically and mentally — they already knew he was ready.

This time around, the Sooners can focus on the areas they need to improve, such as refining the pass game, perfecting the run game, and ensuring everything runs more smoothly.
