The Oklahoma Sooners offense is already ahead of where they were last season, and it’s because of Ben Arbuckle.

This time last year, the vibes were, well, I’d say they were okay, surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners. The defense was great, and we knew that, but most thought the offense would at least be serviceable. Now, with Ben Arbuckle running the show, it will be better.

One thing is for sure — the vibes around the offense last year were not as immaculate as they are right now. Everyone has confidence that the Sooners offense is not only improved, but has a chance to be elite. Then again, is it that hard to be better than last year? They were maybe the worst offense in the country.

Hiring Ben Arbuckle as the offensive coordinator was maybe the best thing Brent Venables could have done. That allowed them to then get the best quarterback in the transfer portal, too, in John Mateer, who played under Ben Arbuckle.

So far, Arbuckle already has this offense in a position to success during fall camp

Ben Arbuckle has Sooners offense in great position in fall camp

The Sooners have been working hard during fall camp, and it’s already extremely noticeable that they will be better. They’re already able to add in new layers of the offense without any issues.

“We’ve been putting in a lot of new plays and stuff, but it’s all great stuff,” wide receiver Isaiah Sategna said. “Every day we put in a new play, and it works. We bring it to the field and then we’ll execute it the right way, and you’ll see the results.”

And a lot of that is because of Ben Arbuckle, who has been considered an offensive genius. And, a lot of that is also because of who is running the show this year at the quarterback position. No disrespect to the guys who played last year, but this time, it feels much different at the QB position.

John Mateer is him.

“He’s [John Mateer] the best quarterback in the country, so every day he just reminds me I got to up my game,” Sategna continued. “He’s one of those people that he makes everyone around him better… I would say the best thing about him is his anticipation. He’s always anticipating. He knows the offense like the back of his hand. He doesn’t have to learn anything; he already knows it. He’s just a very confident person.”

The Sooners are in a good place when it comes to their offense. Being able to add in new things on the offense, and not having any issues is a huge sign. I wasn’t at every single practice, or any for that matter, so I can’t speak on last offseason, but it feels like that may not have been the case last year.

Seth Littrell, the former offensive coordinator, didn’t have much success in his scheme at all. Ben Arbuckle is already having this team in a position to succeed in 2025.
