When former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle was hired to serve as the offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners, many wondered about his ability to recruit.
His first offer might have helped calm some of those fears, as it proves that Arbuckle already gets the Oklahoma recruiting culture.
Just a day after being announced as the Sooners' offensive coordinator, Arbuckle sent an offer to 2025 quarterback Jett Niu, a three-star out of Utah. Coincidentally, Niu is currently committed to play for Oklahoma State.
His first offer being to a quarterback playing for the "little brother" team in the state with the Cowboys is perfect. It's an incredible choice to make, especially because they are likely going to flip him away tomorrow on Early Signing Day.
Immediately after Niu announced this offer, 247Sports logged a prediction for Niu to flip to the Sooners.
Here is Niu's scouting report courtesy of 247Sports:
"Niu had a breakout junior season a year ago throwing for 2,812 yards and 31 touchdowns. He shows good pocket presence and feel, can extend plays and looks just as comfortable throwing outside the pocket as he does from within it. He’s a really good touch passer with a nice feel for layering the ball between defenders. He doesn’t run a ton but does show the ability to take off when pressured and could even run some zone read. He has a quick release and can get the ball out from different arm angles when needed. He’s not going to wow with you his arm strength but it’s functional and he’s able to throw with good timing and anticipation to compensate."
The Sooners needed to add another quarterback to their 2025 recruiting class to replace Kevin Sperry, a Seth Littrell recruit who flipped to Florida State a couple of weeks ago.
Niu is rated as the 20th-best player from Utah in the 2025 class and the top-ranked quarterback in the state.
With how much turnover is expected out of the Oklahoma quarterback room this offseason, the Sooners need to land the players they can to ensure they have some depth in the room. Being able to steal a player from "little brother" to do so is the cherry on top.
